Creation Story

After years of darkness under authoritarian rule, the Syrian revolution succeeded in overthrowing the oppressive regime. With Assad’s fall, life once again pulsed in our hearts—we, the doctors and all medical and healthcare workers—began searching for an incubator to channel our energies.

Through dozens of discussions, the need for a strong entity emerged, one that reflects our determination to rebuild our wounded homeland.

Our greatest driving force and primary motivation was the urgent sense of responsibility toward the healthcare system in a country torn apart by years of war, which had pushed Syria’s medical infrastructure to the brink of collapse.

There is no doubt about the vital role played by doctors, dentists, pharmacists, and other medical professionals in Germany. It is undisputed that they now have a major role to fulfill. Voices rose from here and there, meetings followed one after another, bringing together young men and women from different healthcare fields. This movement began shortly after the fall of the previous regime, in December 2024, and accelerated rapidly in the early weeks of 2025.

After thorough and professional preparation, our wonderful association was born—the Syrian-German Medical Association—starting as a small bud from a coordinating committee that worked tirelessly. This committee understood that the idea was not theirs to claim but rather a seedling to nurture, serving as a foundational body that collaborated with various specialized committees, working in harmony and solidarity to build this promising entity.

Aims and Goals

The Syrian German Medical Association (SGMA) is a unifying platform that brings together Syrian healthcare professionals in Germany and Syria from various specialties and experience levels. It consolidates their efforts and seeks to utilize them to advance the healthcare systems in both countries.

Values

Just as the founding core committed itself to the highest standards of professionalism, the resulting association upholds supreme values—values that define every sincere institution. These values form the central axis around which all activities and initiatives harmoniously revolve.

  • Humanity as a Supreme Value: The association aims to serve all human beings, regardless of their appearance, color, or ethnic, political, or religious affiliation.
  • Political Neutrality: The association does not take a political stance, does not engage in any political activity, and remains impartial to all sides.
  • Loyalty to Both Homelands—Syria and Germany: The association primarily focuses its efforts on Syria and Germany, striving to advance the healthcare system in both countries.
  • Commitment to the Revolution of Dignity in Syria: The association draws inspiration from the Syrian revolution, embracing its values of freedom, resilience, sacrifice, and dignity.

Goals

The association strives to support the healthcare and medical sector in Syria, aiming to enhance the quality of medical services, education, and public awareness through the valuable contributions of professionals from various fields within the healthcare sector.

Additionally, it seeks to strengthen the presence of Syrian medical professionals in Germany by supporting healthcare workers, facilitating their integration into the job market, advocating for their rights, and defending them.

Work

We are committed to building an institutional organization characterized by the highest level of professionalism. Accordingly, the working committees have been structured based on their specializations under the supervision of the administration, ensuring that each committee implements its proposed projects in its respective field. While the committees benefit from a high degree of decentralization, granting them flexibility and agility, they operate in close coordination with the administration, adhering to the association’s objectives and overall vision.

Inspired by the ideals of the revolution for freedom and dignity and committed to independent work that befits the new Syria, a democratic constitution has been developed. This framework governs organizational processes, ensures coherence and structure, upholds the highest standards of representation and transparency, and prevents any form of exclusion or partisan influence.

The constitution of the Syrian-German Medical Association was drafted by a constitutional committee consisting of a group of founding members, with the goal of creating a representative constitution that ensures the exchange of administrative positions and provides adequate oversight of the administration.

Inspired by the constitutions of leading medical associations, special elements were added to grant the association a unique administrative structure and great flexibility. This ensures that the association is not dominated by individuals and that its development remains independent.
